How to Safely Handle a Flat Tyre on Grass, Mud, or Slopes
If you get a flat tyre while parked in a muddy field, at a festival, or on a steep incline, the standard rules of changing a tyre go out the window.
Attempting to lift a 2-ton vehicle on unstable ground is one of the most dangerous things a driver can do. Here is why your emergency jack will fail, and how to resolve the situation without risking your life or your car.
1. The “Sinking Jack” Danger
The scissor jack provided in your car’s boot has a very small base plate. It is designed exclusively for hard, flat tarmac or concrete.
If you place this jack on mud, wet grass, or gravel, the immense weight of the car will force the jack to sink directly into the ground rather than lifting the car.
- The Risk: As the jack sinks unevenly, it will tip over. If the wheel is already off, the car will slam onto the brake disc, causing hundreds of pounds of mechanical damage. Worse, if any part of your body is under the car, the result can be fatal.
2. The Incline Danger
Jacking a car on a slope shifts the vehicle’s centre of gravity. As you lift the car, the angle increases the likelihood of the car rolling off the jack, even if the handbrake is firmly applied. Never attempt a DIY tyre change on a steep hill.
3. Safe Solutions (What You Should Do)
Option A: Slowly Roll to Safe Ground
If you are only a few metres away from a hard, flat tarmac surface, it is often safer to drive the car at a crawling pace (under 5mph) onto the solid ground. You may damage the tyre beyond repair, but you protect your life and the vehicle’s mechanics.
Option B: Improvise a Base Plate (Emergency Only)
If you are completely stranded and must use your scissor jack on soft ground, you must widen its footprint. Place a thick, solid piece of flat wood (like a sturdy plank) underneath the jack to distribute the weight. Never use bricks or stones, as they will shatter under pressure.
Option C: Call the Heavy-Duty Professionals
If you cannot move the car and do not have a solid base, do not risk it.
