Slashed or Vandalised Tyres: Insurance Advice & Fast Replacement

Finding your car with slashed or maliciously punctured tyres is an incredibly frustrating and violating experience. While your first instinct might be to call your insurance company, you need to weigh the long-term costs against getting moving today.

Here is what you need to do immediately, and the smartest way to get the vehicle back on the road.

1. Safety and Police Reporting

If you suspect your tyres were slashed deliberately, do not touch the vehicle initially.

  • Look around: Check if any other cars on your street have been targeted.
  • Report it: Call 101 (the non-emergency police number) to report criminal damage and get a Crime Reference Number (CRN). You will need this if you decide to claim on your insurance.

2. The Insurance Trap

Many drivers assume they should instantly claim slashed tyres on their comprehensive car insurance. Proceed with extreme caution.

  • The Excess: Most insurance policies have a standard excess of £150 to £250.
  • The Premium Hike: Making a malicious damage claim counts as a “fault/unrecovered” claim in the eyes of insurers. This will strip your No Claims Bonus and likely increase your renewal premium for the next 3 to 5 years.
  • The Delay: Insurance-approved garages can take 2 to 4 days to process the claim, tow the car, and fit the new tyres.

If the damage is limited to 1 or 2 tyres, it is almost always significantly cheaper in the long run to pay for the replacements out of pocket.

3. Can a Slashed Tyre Be Repaired?

No. A standard puncture repair can only be performed in the central tread area of the tyre — the part that touches the road. Vandals almost exclusively slash the sidewall of the tyre.

The sidewall bears the structural weight of the vehicle and flexes as you drive. A sidewall puncture or slash cannot be legally or safely repaired. The tyre must be replaced.

4. The Fastest Way to Recover

You have a car you cannot drive, and towing it to a garage is expensive and time-consuming. The most efficient solution is bringing the garage to your driveway.

Rescue Fitter operates a network of independent mobile tyre fitters who can replace vandalised tyres on-site.

  1. Enter your vehicle registration to find your exact tyre size.
  2. Select your preferred tyre tier (Budget to Premium).
  3. We dispatch a local fitter directly to your home or workplace to fit and balance brand-new tyres immediately.
