Breaking down on a motorway is stressful. Breaking down on a “Smart Motorway” without a traditional hard shoulder can feel terrifying.

Visibility is your best defense. Immediately turn on your hazard warning lights. If visibility is poor (rain, fog, or night), turn on your side lights and rear fog lights as well.

3. Exit the Vehicle Safely

• Never exit on the traffic side. You and all passengers must exit the vehicle using the left-hand doors (the passenger side) away from the live lanes.
• Get yourself and your family behind the crash barrier and move up the bank if possible. Do not wait inside the car, and do not attempt to place a warning triangle on a motorway.

4. Trigger the “Red X” (Call National Highways)

You need to get the lane closed behind you to protect your car.
